Andy Yoder
Path, 2004

University of South Florida, Tampa
Engineering Complex

Path, by Andy Yoder takes the form of a linear park. Yoder lined the pathway that transports the visitor through the park with large granite boulders imported from Vermont where the artist lives. On the boulders he inscribed a proverb, “ Don’t ignore the small things - the kite flies because of its tail”. Only one word appears on each stone, so the viewer is required first to discover the words and then put them together by walking the full length of the park to read the entire phase. The proverb is intended to remind future engineers of how important the details are to engineering.

The artist selected native trees for the landscape surrounding the pathway. Three benches placed in a shaded area toward the center point of the pathway invite the visitor to stay a while and enjoy the natural environment.
