Leslie Lerner
At Graphicstudio, artist Leslie Lerner created two editions of ceramic sculpture with hand-painting. Using molds hand built by the artist, white bisque ware was slip cast to make representations of buildings. The artist then made unique paintings in acrylic on each sculpture.
The buildings represented are a house and a foundry, in a style reminiscent of eighteenth century Europe. The almost open doors and the open and shuttered windows invite and deny curiosity, while the paintings on the sheer walls add further intrigue: do they offer clues to the structures' use and history, or do they simply take advantage of a good surface?
Leslie Lerner endows his work with great tactile and visual sensuousness and high technical skill. Deeply engaged in contemporary discourse about art, Lerner's themes and subjects delve freely into the history of art and civilization. These Graphicstudio sculptures form part of Lerner's ongoing series entitled My Life in France: the Man with the Wooden Arm, the imaginative journey through time and space of his alter ego, "the man with the wooden arm."
Lerner's work, encompassing painting, printmaking and sculpture, is represented in public and private collections throughout the country. He was professor of art at the Ringling School of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida.
