Glenda León
Glenda León (b. 1976) is a Cuban visual artist based in Havana and Madrid. The artist received her B.A. in art history from the University of Havana and later studied at the Academy of New Media in Cologne, Germany.
León works in various forms including sculpture, drawing, video art, installations and photography. She is interested in the cross between visible and invisible, sound and silence, and between ephemeral and eternal. Léon often uses raw materials and by-products of music along with materials directly from her body such as strands of hair or gum she has chewed.
Mirages: The Hidden Story of the Broken Sidewalk; Mirages: Light and Shadow
In her work with Graphicstudio, Léon explores her interest in mathematical fractals. Fractals are objects in which the same patterns occur again and again at different scales and sizes. In mathematical fractals, each pattern is made up of smaller copies of itself, and those smaller copies are made up of smaller copies infinitely. Léon is interested in representing those occurrences found in nature and illustrating with cracked concrete, formed clay and cyanotypes.
León’s work resides in the permanent collections of Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, Hammer Museum at UCLA, Cuban National Museum of Fine Arts, Perez Art Museum Miami, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center's Museum. She has received prizes such as The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and residencies like Couvent des Recollets, in Paris and Fonderie Darling, in Montreal.
