Richard Beckman
Moby, 2000

University of South Florida, St. Petersburg
United States Geological Survey

Moby by Richard Beckman is a functional table and seating bench that take the form of a hurricane and a barrier island. Beckman intended the project as a place were the staff of the United States Geological Survey facility could relax and have informal meetings in a setting that symbolically represented the focus of the work done at the office in St. Petersburg; hurricanes and their interaction with land. The hurricane table in Moby seems to have affected the shape of the barrier island bench, just as barrier islands are often shaped by hurricanes in reality.
