Vito Acconci
Vito Acconci's work is multi-faceted, including prints, poetry, performance works, bodyworks, installations, videos and architectural installations.
Working at Graphicstudio in the mid-eighties, Acconci created one monumental etching and a series of three small etchings, employing conventional techniques as well as shaped plates and embossing.
Building Blocks for a Doorway utilizes individual etching plates as "blocks" for the print, around the doorway representing letters of the alphabet, while the ones comprising the rest of the print pertain to three different types of text: handwritten personal accounts, literary criticism, and architecture. The three mask etchings address sociopolitical themes in a context of plates cut to resemble variations on the "happy faces" of pop culture.
