Richard Smith (1931–2016) was a British painter known for his distinctive explorations of color, form, and three-dimensional space. Drawing on influences from both Pop Art and Color Field painting, Smith developed a highly individual approach that made him one of the most original British artists of his generation.
Influenced by artists including Mark Rothko and Kenneth Noland, Smith increasingly focused on pure color, often using shaped, three-dimensional canvases. In the 1970s and ’80s, his experiments evolved into his celebrated kite-like paintings, constructed with aluminum rods rather than traditional wooden stretchers and suspended from walls or ceilings.
Smith received a retrospective at London’s Whitechapel Gallery in 1966 and represented Britain at the 1970 Venice Biennale. The Tate Gallery presented a retrospective of his work in 1975, recognizing him as “an odd artist, at once in and out of touch with the currents in the mainstream.”
