Jason Middlebrook
Jason Middlebrook (b. 1966) is originally from Jackson, Michigan, and currently lives and works in Hudson, NY. Middlebrook earned his B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz and received his M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1994, he attended a yearlong Whitney Independent Study Program in New York, and in 2009 completed an Iaspis Residency in Stockholm, Sweden.
Middlebrook is a mixed-media artist who works in sculpture, installation, works on paper and site-specific projects. Middlebrook is known for his use of the natural world illustrating the interaction of nature and humans at the moment they collide. Middlebrook has long used “live-edge” slabs of wood along with planks, trunks, rough-hewn boards and logs in his work. These rough bark slabs allow the artist to create imagery that accentuates the fact that this was once a living part of nature. He then creates volume and depth by painting geometric patterns in response to the rings on the wood. The wood used by Middlebrook typically comes from a tree farm in Western Massachusetts, very close to his home which he has nicknamed “the wood museum.”
The Skies of Croton
The Skies of Croton is a series of unique screenprints with hand painting, inspired by the croton shrubs that grow in South Florida. The croton is a tropical plant that has colorful and variegated leaves, ranging from green, yellow, red, orange, and purple. Middlebrook was fascinated by the diversity and vibrancy of the croton foliage, and decided to use it as a motif for these large-scale monoprints. He created abstract compositions that resemble the shapes and colors of the croton leaves, and added geometric patterns and lines that contrast with the organic forms. He also used different techniques, such as stenciling, masking, and layering, to create depth and texture in his prints. The result is a series of stunning and dynamic monoprints that celebrate the natural beauty and diversity of the croton plant, and also reflect the artist's personal connection to the tropical environment.
Date City
In his unique project with Graphicstudio, Middlebrook selected local tress from Dade City, Florida then silkscreened multiple runs and colors rather than painting by hand.
Inspired By the Notion That Location Is Everything #1-13
Middlebrook also completed a series of unique lithograph/screenprints, Inspired By the Notion That Location Is Everything #1-13, referencing plant life found around the studio.
Middlebrook has exhibited his work extensively at institutions such as the New Museum in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT, and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The artist now lives and works in Hudson, NY.
