Teresita Fernández
Teresita Fernández (b. 1968) is among the most acclaimed artists of her generation. She is internationally known for her immersive room-size installations and evocative large-scale sculptures that address space, light, and perception and explore the cultural fabrication of nature. These referential constructions are characterized by her deft transformation of common materials into dazzling cinematic illusions. Through minimal means, Fernández blends abstraction, reflection, and transparency into potent mixtures of projection and play. “I am interested in the projection of the body, in an imaginary, kinesthetic way, penetrating history and distance cinematically, almost like a daydream,” she explains. “It’s as if, through visual pleasure, your gaze positions you in a place without actually being there.” For Fernández, how one sees is as relevant as what one sees.
Apparition (Green), Mirror Trellis, Landscape Panoramic Mirror
Apparition (Green) takes its name from its phenomenological effects. The outline of its arboreal form is precisely cut from stainless steel using water jet and polished to a mirror finish on both sides. The layered reflections of vertiginous foliage recede through other layers of reflection and project a green halo of shadows and light on the wall behind it. Though clearly visible from a distance or when observed obliquely, the surface disintegrates as one approaches, sliding away from optical certainty, disappearing and reappearing, interlocking time, light, and material and creating a cinematic whole wherein we can no longer distinguish individual elements.
Vertigo (sotto en su)
Vertigo (sotto en su) is comprised of 11 layers of precision water jet cut, highly polished aluminum woven into a reflective and intricate arboreal pattern spanning twelve feet suspended above the viewer’s head - not unlike an immense, cascading tree branch. The multiple planes of space become visible simultaneously, vacillating between object and optical phenomena, continuously disassembling and reassembling.
