John Chamberlain
American artist John Chamberlain is known for his works incorporating scrap parts from automobiles; he welds together the pieces to make large-scale, multi-colored freestanding sculptures and wall hangings. Untitled (1994) is an ingenious bas-relief, printed version of these sculptures. Two colors of ink were screenprinted on a sheet of aluminum which was then crinkled in a custom-made press.
Chamberlain was born in 1927 in Rochester, Indiana. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Black Mountain College. He began working under the influence of sculptor David Smith, working with metal pipes, and made his first automobile parts sculpture in 1957. He had a 1971 retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and another at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 1986. His works are in major public and private collections worldwide. He currently lives and works on Shelter Island, New York.
